eatured here - especially interesting because of it's U.S. provenance, is a polished cab of dense Oregon gold ore. Native gold, numerous inclusions, adorn the lustrous black mineral. These darker zones are distinctive from the white and silvery-grey colored quartz. The matrix is much harder than one might expect. The gold captured inside this complex mineral gumbo is quite yellow. This gem wasn't made in a factory, it's natural gold ore extracted from a mine in Oregon. I was elated to find a specimen hard enough to be converted into gemstone cabochon.

MY TIME AS A MINER
All things considered, for the amount of ground worked (a few hundred measly yards), almost all of it by hand or with suction dredges, the 200 oz. I recovered seemed like a respectable haul. That would equate to a nice pile of money on today's market, but it wasn't worth much back when placer-mining was my passion. I knew small-scale miners who found so much gold this production paled in comparison. Truth be told, I spent way too much time digging 'hungry dirt'. Nonetheless, even failures can be rewarding. In looking back, it's gratifying being able to tell oneself at the end of the day "at least I tried". If there's one valuable lesson about gold prospecting a guy who's been there might pass along, it's "go where the gold is, not where it isn't".
Here again, let me emphasize that whatever level of commercial success you experience, be passionate about what you do and strive to improve, both the quality of your work and your own character. You'll find yourself much happier in the long run. It's sad and surprising how many people choose to become 'loaf about the forts', defeatists, victims, and leaches. O.K. so you didn't have the advantages others had. Hey, no one ever said life was fair! I say anyone can accomplish anything they set their minds to. A pair of deuces can beat two pair any day if you play your cards right.
Having endured and succeeded at a gold prospector's life-way, the best parts for me were the search, being allowed to work outdoors in the natural world every day, the sharing of experiences with fellow seekers, the camaraderie which came of those associations, the occasional rich pay-streak, and feeling the excitement of others when you show them where to find 'color' and they do. The hunt for wild gold can lead to some of the most amazing adventures imaginable.
