    Description

Outstanding Example of a Quality Danced Mask
For sale is a  Northwest coast carved and painted dance rigged Atlakim Imitation dance mask.
The mask is signed by the artist Simon Dick (1951- ) from alert Bay who is a Kwakwaka`wakw chief  since 1983 and has participated in many ceremonial events.
The Atlakim mask is a series of Kwakiutl dance masks which represent a variety of characters; this one being the "imitation" spirit or persona.
So each Atlakim is a different themed dance with different characters adorned with masks.
Simon worked with Tony Hunt and Bill Reid among many others during is his career.
This cedar mask circa 1970s is adorned with cedar bark hair, & feathers (origin unknown)
The measurements of this mask are
11 1/2X 11 1/2 inches: It is in good condition for its age and use.
The mouth and the nostrils are pierced.
The writing inside in pencil is as follows: "Kwakuitl Atlakim Imitation  Nov. 1984 Simon Dick".
Dance rigged masks are very sought after by collectors and do not come up for sale often.  This mask  would be a wonderful addition to any Northwest Coast or Native American art collection.
